Governance & finance

philanthropy at the cutting-edge

C21 originates initiatives through core funding, and develops them further with partners and funders.

More on governance & finance

C21 was set-up and seed-funded by Walt and Nick Beglinger. The foundation is governed by an independent board. C21 is Zurich-based, duly registered and administered by Swiss federal law as a tax exempt, internationally active foundation. C21 mobilizes development resources through core funding and based on project finance. Latter includes funding for C21’s ongoing role in originated initiatives (project-specific capacity and expenses). Project governance is generally delegated to committees representing all project partners. C21 does not engage in mandated research or project development, but selectively takes-up speaking and short-term advisory assignments.

His background was in trade finance, banking and real estate. He sold his trade finance company to Swiss Banking Corporation (SBC, now UBS). Walt has been an active philanthropist in the fields of culture and nature since the early days of his career. He initiated the Dimitri Foundation to support one of Switzerland’s most talented comedians, he founded the Kiwanis Club Zurich-Manesse, and he was a key sponsor of the Zurich Zoo.
